"Corrupt oligarchic forces with the help of the Kremlin are trying to take power almost everywhere in post-soviet space. This has happened some years ago in Ukraine, Moldova and many other places. Georgia is not an exemption.
Here, in the EU we must be clear – the elections in Georgia were not democratic, we cannot recognize them, the Georgian Dream has not won. We need to call for an independent international investigation," said a member of the European Parliament.
According to Yukneviciane, Georgia's EU candidate status is already frozen and will remain so.
"We will need to reassess if Georgia remains eligible for the visa free status. We can no longer justify EU bilateral assistance to Georgian state institutions.
I say all of these with sadness. The Georgian people deserve better. They support a pro-European path and we in the EU support them.
From now on the EU must speak very clearly to both the Georgian society and the Georgian Dream that stole the elections from them: EU membership is not compatible with an oligarchic system. To be more clear, EU membership is only possible after “debidzinization” of the country," said Rasa Yukneviciane.
The disputed results of Georgia's parliamentary elections, including alleged Russian interference, were discussed during the European Parliament’s plenary session on November 13. A resolution on this topic is expected at the end of the month.
