The U.S. Does Not Want to Join the European Union, Unlike Georgia – Kaja Kallas in Response to Rustavi 2 Question

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, in response to a question from the pro-government TV channel Rustavi 2, explained that, unlike Georgia, the United States is not seeking to join the European Union.

At a press conference held in The Hague, a journalist from Rustavi 2 TV asked Kaja Kallas the following question:

“You, the European Union, have many times stated that Georgia could not become part of the European Union with its rhetoric about the European bureaucracy, about the European Union. Now we see that the same narratives are in the US's security strategy. What is your answer to that?... Since Washington’s rhetoric now aligns with Tbilisi’s rhetoric, are you prepared to accuse the Trump administration of following the Kremlin-dictated script, or does this expose a fundamental double standard in your policy towards Georgia?

The EU High Representative responded:

The difference is that the United States is not trying to join the European Union. Of course, the National Security Strategy that we read there is not pleasant reading. We have taken this approach that we are not going to meddle with our allies’ internal politics.

When it comes to Georgia, the main problem is that when one side of Georgia is saying that we want to join the European Union and take the European path, we see the steps going in the totally wrong direction by the government. So, it is a signal to the government that as long as they continue with this policy of suppressing opposition, pressuring free media, all these steps which go in contradiction with the values of the European Union, there is no European Union future for Georgia”.

The National Security Strategy of the United States, signed by President Donald Trump, was recently published. The strategy accuses European Union countries of censoring free speech and suppressing political opposition.

The document also criticises immigration policy and states that Europe faces the danger of “civilizational erasure”.

The Trump administration's strategy also states that a priority will be “cultivating resistance to Europe’s current trajectory within European nations,” and notes that “the growing influence of patriotic European parties indeed gives cause for great optimism.”

The strategy emphasises that America's “core interest” is to negotiate an “expeditious cessation” to the war in Ukraine, prevent “unintended escalation” of military action, and reestablish “strategic stability with Russia.”

Dmitry Peskov, First Deputy Press Secretary of the Russian President, welcomed the document, describing it as a “positive step” and saying it was “largely compatible” with the Russian government's vision.
