“Georgian Dream’s decision to suspend European Union accession is a betrayal of the Georgian constitution. We condemn excessive force used against Georgians exercising their freedom to protest and have suspended our Strategic Partnership with Georgia,” Matthew Miller writes on Platform X.
Earlier, Miller's detailed statement was posted on the State Department's website, citing the anti-democratic actions of Georgian Dream as the reason for the suspension of the US-Georgia strategic partnership.
The President of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, responded to the US decision. According to her, it is now clearer than ever that the course chosen by Georgian Dream is leading in only one direction - toward Russia.
"The suspension of the US-Georgia strategic partnership is a tragic consequence of the anti-democratic, anti-Western, anti-European, and anti-Georgian policies of Georgian Dream," said the president.
Mamuka Mdinaradze, the general secretary of Georgian Dream, wrote on the social network Facebook that the State Department is "helping" to intensify the ongoing protests in Georgia. According to him, the decision was made by the administration of President Joe Biden before the inauguration of Donald Trump.
"What have they suspended us from - visa-free travel, free trade, or direct flights? Long live independent Georgia?" Mdinaradze asks.
The leader of Georgian Dream echoed a statement previously made by the illegitimate Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, claiming that violence was being prepared in Georgia for December, and in effect, blamed the USA for it. "Really, how huge news was planned for December?" Mamuka Mdinaradze wrote.
As per Article 78 of the Constitution of Georgia, constitutional bodies must take all measures within their power to ensure Georgia’s full integration into the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
On November 28, Irakli Kobakhidze stated that Georgian Dream will not raise the issue of opening negotiations with the European Union until the end of 2028 and will also refuse any budget grants from the European Union.
