Georgian judoka Lasha Bekauri, 24, won Georgia's first gold medal at the Olympic Games in Paris in the 90 kg category. In the final, Bekauri faced and defeated one of the tournament's main favorites, Japanese judoka Sanshiro Murao.

Lasha Bekauri defeated Bulgarian Ivaylo Ivanov with a waza-ari in the round of 16 and beat South Korean Han Ju-yeop with an ippon in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he faced Tristani Mosakhlishvili, who competed for Spain, and won in extra time.
Lasha Bekauri first competed at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where he won a gold medal.
At the Olympic Games in Paris, the Georgian delegation has secured two medals: one gold, won by Bekauri, and one silver, won by Tato Grigalashvili in the 81 kg weight category.
