Georgian Dream Parliament Revokes Mandates of 12 Gakharia Party Members

The Georgian Dream parliament revoked mandates of former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia and 11 members of his party.

According to Davit Matikashvili, chairman of the Procedural Issues Committee, the members of the For Georgia party missed all 26 sessions of the spring session for an unexcused reason, which, according to the Parliament's regulations, is a basis for terminating their powers.

"According to the summary protocol of the Central Election Commission regarding the 2024 parliamentary elections, among the parties that crossed the barrier was the For Georgia party, which had the opportunity to use 12 mandates in the Parliament, but unfortunately, they did not use these mandates and missed all 26 sessions of the spring session for an unexcused reason," Matikashvili said.

Giorgi Gakharia, Teona Akubardia, Ana Buchukuri, Levan Gogichaishvili, Zaza Tavadze, Beka Liluashvili, Natia Mezvrishvili, Berdia Sichinava, Kakha Kemoklidze, Roin Kochorashvili, Dimitri Tskitishvili, and Zviad Dzidziguri had their powers terminated. In addition, due to "unexcused" absence from sessions, the party will not receive budgetary funding for the next 6 months.

Giorgi Gakharia responded to the decision of the one-party parliament on social network X:

"Today, Georgian Dream, as a one-party regime, unanimously voted to cancel all 12 mandates of the For Georgia party. Political boycott is a constitutional right, which we responsibly used after the rigged elections of 2024, refusing to enter the legislative body, but we did not refuse the people's mandate, the cancellation of our mandates was never a procedural issue; this was clearing the way for politically motivated persecution, lifting immunity before fabricated charges, and eliminating the main political threat before the municipal elections. We have already seen this, a page torn from the Kremlin's scenario: lift immunity, fabricate criminal charges, and destroy political alternatives."

Unlike other opposition parties, Giorgi Gakharia's party did not apply to the Central Election Commission with a request to cancel the election list, which means that the Georgian Dream parliament will consider recognizing the powers of the next 12 members of the list.

In February, the powers of 49 members of three opposition political coalitions were terminated.
